Literacy Charity ‘ @CWBeanstalk ‘ Thanks Volunteers With Tour of #Coventry


Last Friday, to celebrate Volunteers’ Week, Beanstalk Coventry & Warwickshire thanked its volunteers with a Literary Tour of Coventry city centre. The fascinating walk was guided by Dr Eleanor Nesbitt of Warwick University who explained the links with local landmark buildings and their associations to famous writers and poets. It was attended by existing volunteer s and people interested in learning more about the charity.

Beanstalk is a children’s literacy charity whose dedicated volunteers go into local schools for two 90 minute sessions per week and volunteer for at least one year. Sessions are fun and aim to ignite a love of reading.

There are existing vacancies across Coventry primary schools.Beanstalk are looking for people to volunteer as ‘Trained Reading Helpers’ to support children in Coventry.

All of our volunteers receive training prior to being placed with a school and receive on-going support including a school tour, regular visits, additional training and also the opportunity to attend other social events such as book exchanges and coffee mornings.

Business Rates will change on 1st April 2017

The Valuation Office published draft business rates valuations on all commercial property last Friday, 30 September. All occupiers of commercial premises should be aware of the implications of the revaluation and consider the effect of the tax on business plans and cash flow.

It has been seven years since all non-domestic properties in England and Wales were nationally valued. The 2017 revaluation is based upon shop, office, workshop, warehouse and other sector rental levels, established 1 April 2015. These rateable values will sustain for the next five years.


Between 2010 and 2014 most commercial rental values decreased and have only recovered ground in the last two years. No matter though, if assessments have increased, stayed the same or decreased, rate payers will need to check the new rateable value facts are correct and establish if in its breakdown, the valuation accords with 2015 rents, for the particular location. It is crucial business occupiers make themselves familiar with the new ‘Check, Challenge, Appeal’ process.

This new system may prove confusing in terms of valuation, the challenge process, timing and the cost of an appeal. Our family favourite Santa visit, Father Christmas and Friends is set to return to EGO Arts Venue in Cook Street on Saturday 17th December for one week only! A winter trail through a magical Christmas wonderland awaits families in Coventry this Yuletide.

Families are invited to join Ivy Pixie Fairy on an adventure through the Christmas trail for a very special visit to see Father Christmas. Along the way they will meet Widow Winterberry the dormouse in her cosy home, Figgy Fancypants champion Christmas Cracker maker, Poinsettia the singing snowman, Frosty Jack the Ice Prince and Eggnog the Chief Elf !


Co-Artistic Director of EGO Performance Company, Georgina Egan, commented “We wanted to create something truly magical this Christmas for children in Coventry and the local area so we are pleased to bring back Father Christmas and Friends after it’s huge success in 2014. It’s a 40 minute long, interactive experience for children of all ages, joining Ivy Pixie on a magical winter trail to meet Santa. Along the way the children meet all of Santa’s friends, they dance with the Snowman, throw Snowballs at Frosty Jack and much more. Upon finding the Grotto, each child individually meets Santa, where you can take your own photo and listen as Santa gives your child a personal message from the nice list and each child receives a gift if they’ve been good this year!”

 Santa and his friends will be at EGO Arts Venue every day from the 17th to 23rd December 2016.

How we use Thermography ?

When we come round and tell you where those pesky rodents are hiding, we are looking at thermograms which are effectively images of infrared radiation, colour coded with visible light so that we can see the patterns. You may think to yourself that that sounds easy but you’d be surprised! Our specially trained thermographers (for more of their work see must deal with a lot of elements before we can even start telling you what the problem is. The most complicated element is emissivity. Emissivity is the reciprocal reflectance of an object, which, put simply, means that the higher the emissivity, the less IR radiation that object reflects and so the truer the values presented on the thermal imaging camera. When there is a low emissivity the object appears hotter than it is as it not only shows the emission of IR radiation but the reflection too and so these objects appear to be much hotter than they really are. Therefore, it’s best to call out an expert like us!

Rodents making you squeak with rage?

Rodents in shops are a huge cause for concern and can lead to your shop being closed for health and safety reasons. By using thermal imaging cameras we can cut the time it takes to assess the damage and, by proxy, cut the time needed to solve the issue. Believe it or not, there will definitely be mice living and nesting on you shelves, even if your outbreak does not seem too bad. We have unfortunately learnt this from experience! These are the mice that traditional pest controllers leave undiscovered which causes huge problems as the mice that are left will reproduce and spread back through the entirety of the shop. With our cameras we can spot these nests and clear them out without any escapees! Furthermore, if you have mice or rats using your walls as escape routes or even for nesting, we can see this too and can use our special mesh to prevent any further activity. By being able to act on this quickly, you are much more likely to see the end of your rodent problem in a time period of two days as opposed to the traditional time period of a minimum of two weeks. This cuts the number of hours needed for a pest controller to be there, cuts the amount of product used to stop the rodents, cuts the amount of overtime you need to pay your staff and additionally cuts the likelihood of being shut down by health inspectors! I’m sure you’ll agree that it is a win-win all round (except for the rodents that is)!

Bridal gown designer says yes to Coventry and Warwickshire Reinvestment Trust (CWRT) Start Up Loan‏


Brides across the region have been snapping up non-traditional shorter length bridal gowns from Stratford-upon-Avon’s BoHo Bride for the past 12 months.

Now, thanks to a £20,000 start-up loan received from the Coventry and Warwickshire Reinvestment Trust (CWRT), owner Lynette Turner is launching her own brand of Bohemian style separates collection of wedding gowns, with different options of coordinating tops and bottoms, also suitable for curvy brides, with floaty lace and different sleeves options. with the aim of making more brides wedding dress dream a reality at BoHo Bride Boutique.

Lynette explains: “I worked in the wedding industry on and off for over 20 years, as a wedding planner, organiser, and in wedding design and dress retail marketing sector. So, when I came into some money of my own, it seemed like a natural next step to set up my own wedding boutique business. I’ve worked hard over the past year to establish the boutique and, through both my mistakes and successes, I knew what was working and what I still needed help with. That was when I turned to CWRT for additional support and to help finance the next stage of Boho Bride’s growth – expanding our range with the launch of our very own bespoke bridal gown collection.”

Thanks to the cash boost from CWRT, Lynette was able to establish BoHo Bride Boutique’s own label collection, designed specifically for the boutique, plus ordering new designer sample gowns from her chosen designers new 2016/17 collections.
